Idaho Equine Hospital welcomes veterinary students for externships lasting 1–4 weeks, with most students electing to participate for two weeks. Preference is given to third- and fourth-year veterinary students. On-site housing is provided.
Externs gain hands-on exposure to a diverse equine caseload while working closely with our staff veterinarians during both regular hours and after-hours emergency coverage. Clinical experience may include:
Externs also assist intern veterinarians and technicians with treatments and emergency cases after hours, providing valuable practical experience in a fast-paced hospital setting. This externship offers an excellent opportunity for students to become familiar with the Idaho Equine Hospital Internship Program (please see our AAEP listing or website for additional details).
To schedule an externship, please contact Jenny Espinoza at jespinoza@idahoequine.com or (208) 466-4613.

We are a team of 12 veterinarians, and we also host 3 intern veterinarians each year. Our doctors include general practitioners as well as board-certified specialists in internal medicine, critical care, and surgery. We also have specialists in advanced dentistry and reproduction, along with providers offering chiropractic and acupuncture care.
Our veterinarians are supported by an outstanding team of licensed veterinary technicians and experienced veterinary assistants.
We are a 24/7/365 equine-only hospital serving a large primary care population. Our services include internal medicine, surgery, emergency and critical care, reproduction, and more. As the only referral hospital in the region, we manage a substantial after-hours caseload.
Students have the opportunity to participate in daytime cases alongside all veterinarians and in after-hours cases with our interns and the primary on-call veterinarian. Depending on experience level, time may range from shadowing to active involvement in patient care. The overall experience is largely shaped by the student’s initiative and engagement.
Students are encouraged to spend as much time as possible observing and participating in cases, while also taking time to explore and enjoy the surrounding area as their schedule allows.
