Description of Elective Experience

Our three doctor small animal general practice serves the urban community of Huntington, IN.  As a general practice, the student will see patients for annual wellness exams and vaccinations, common sick exams, and mild emergency exams.  Participation in examination, disease work-up, and treatment plans is expected.  General surgery such as ovariohysterectomies, castrations, lumpectomies, and dental cleanings are also performed at this facility.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We are a three doctor staff with 4 registered veterinary technicians, 4 veterinary assistants and 3 receptionists.  We utilize digital radiography and have IDEXX syste  for in-house CBC, chemisty, urinalysis, and cytology. We are open Monday thru Friday seeing appointments mornings and afternoon with rotating schedule for doctors performing surgeries each morning.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student will be responsible for assisting with exams and case workup.  Developing treatment plan with supervising doctor would follow.

Communicating findings and diagnostic/treatment plans with owner.

Student will be allowed to assist in surgery.

There will be a mixture of assisting and shadowing pending cases and temperament of some patients.

34 to 36 hours a week would be anticipated for a work week.  Monday thru Friday.
