The student will work with all four veterinarians in the practice, traveling on large animal calls as well as working within the clinic. The student will be involved in on farm pregnancy checks, individual animal exams and treatment, as well as discussions with owners and herd managers on farm management pertaining to animal health. In the small animal clinic the student will be involved in physical exams and surgeries. The student will be encouraged to use surgical skills and provide differential diagnoses.
We have fully supplied trucks for on farm work, with two linear ultrasounds that we share. In the clinic we have a sector probe ultrasound that our veterinarians use regularly for abdominal scans, as well as digital X ray, CBC and blood chem, and an incubator for routine cultures. We have 4 full and part time technicians as well as a receptionist and office manager supporting the large and small animal practices.
The student is expected to be prepared to work by 8:30 AM five days a week, with on call for after hour farm animal calls. Actual support will depend on the student's expertise, although participation would be expected, as described under the elective experience.
A bedroom will be provided in the veterinary practice owners' home, with the ability to come and go as the student chooses. No smoking is allowed. Pet accommodation can be made prior to the student arrival.
