Description of Elective Experience

Observe and participate in general shelter medical operations including: soft tissue surgery (primarily spay/neuter), pre-surgical exams, HQHVSN surgical and anesthetic techniques, clinic morning and post-surgical rounds, shelter animal exams, medical and surgical record entry, shelter rounds, weekly pathway meeting, etc.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Staffing: 1FT, 1PT veterinarian; 2FT CVTs; 1PT veterinary assistant; volunteers. Equipment: inhalant anesthesia machines, Cardell monitors, digital dental radiology, digital radiology, in-house CBC and chemistry analyzers, microscope (in-house fecal analyses, urinalyses, etc.). 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

We have 10 h shifts currently Monday through Thursday. The student will initially shadow and, as veterinarian comfort and student experience/comfort dictate, the student would transition to practicing surgery and medicine.
