High Performance Equine, VA

Description of Elective Experience

High Performance Equine is an ambulatory equine sports medicine practice based in northern Virginia, with winter time coverage in the Wellington, FL marketplace. We see appointments Monday through Friday on an elective basis. The caseload is focused on English sport horses, especially show jumper and dressage sport horses. Students will accompany our veterinarians on farm calls, participate in case discussions, and observe lameness examinations and associated treatments. We offer a range of veterinary services including performance examinations, purchase examinations and consultations, and diagnostic imaging. Our treatment plans utilize innovative techniques, such as ultrasound guided injections and regenerative medicine.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We are a two doctor practice and have two veterinary technicians who support our veterinarians on calls. Equipment includes digital radiography, ultrasound, upper airway endoscope, shockwave machine, Phovia fluorescent light therapy, and centrifuges for processing orthobiologic therapies.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students will be expected to accompany doctors on farm calls during our regular hours, Monday Through Friday, approximately 8:30-5:30. Solid horse experience is required as students will be required to handle horses. The experience will be a mix of observation and direct participation. Duties could include jogging horses for lameness examinations, moving equipment on and off trucks, preparing patients for treatments, and assisting with radiographs.
