Hess McWilliams Veterinary Services (Amherst, MA)

Description of Elective Experience

Our practice offers experience in all large animal species, both food animal and equine. We are a 5 doctor practice in Western MA. Our clientele is 40% food animal (primarily dairy with some beef and small ruminant) and 60% equine (a mix of back yard to performance horses). We host a lot of students, both pre-vet and veterinary and our vets enjoy teaching and working with students. Students who extern with us will be able to gain hands-on experience in food animal medicine, including rectal palpation/ultrasound, emergencies, surgeries and herd-health consultations. In equine medicine, we can offer experience in wellness, dentistry, reproduction (seasonally), sports medicine/lameness and emergencies.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We have 5 veterinarians and 4-6 support staff (office staff and technicians) depending on season.

We have multiple reproductive ultrasound machines, digital x-ray, endoscopy/gastroscopy, general ultrasound, shockwave, lameness locator, pro-stride and lameness locator.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Veterinary students typically work with the vets Monday- Friday 6:30 am until we are finished (between 3:30-5:30 pm most days). There might be opportunities to meet up for after hours emergencies if desired.

The student will be in the truck with the vet all day with lots of time for discussion and questions. We like to get vet students as involved as possible hands-on, palpating, giving injections, drawing blood, doing dentals, and assisting with surgery as feasible. We all like to teach and are supportive and encouraging.
