Hayfield Animal Hospital, VA

Description of Elective Experience

Hayfield Animal Hospital is a full service small animal facility, offering both routine and emergency treatment options for clients.  We pride ourselves on being prepared to handle all aspects of treatment for pets, by maintaining a large three table surgical suite, dental and whole body radiography, ultrasound and testing equipment.  Although procedures do vary from week to week, it is realistic to expect to experience most if not all of the following:

  • Ovariohysterectomy (spay)
  • Pet neutering
  • Hernia repair
  • Laceration repair
  • Extensive and simple mass removal
  • Eye enucleation
  • Soft tissue
  • Limb, digit or tail amputation
  • Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO)
  • Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) repair- *TPLO, *Extracapsular stabilization
  • Trauma and emergency surgery
  • Veterinary diagnostics
  • Cystotomy
Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Multiple doctors on site daily and access to Veterinary Information Network, up to date anatomy and treatment manuals in our library.  We will familiarize externs on use of Cornerstone, Idexx laboratory equipment and aspects of charting and tracking patient records.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

In order to make full use of the externship opportunity, we encourage students to be present for as much of the week as possible.  Doctors typically start their day at 9 and end at 7, with surgeries scheduled in the late morning to early afternoon.  We are open M-F and half Saturdays.  Shadowing and support would be fluid, with the student extern shadowing and assisting in procedures as they felt best suited their learning needs.
