Description of Elective Experience

We are a 2 doctor small animal practice seeing dogs and cats only. We see routine adult wellness visits, geriatric visits, puppy visits, and  non-urgent sick/problem visits that include urinary concerns, dermatology, masses/lumps and bumps, mobility, and minor injuries. We perform dental cleanings, often with extractions, spays/neuters, mass removals. Rarely cystotomy, enucleation, toe amputations, tail amputations ("Happy Tail")

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We have Idexx benchtops- sedivue, snap pro, catalyst, procyte machines. However our bloodwork is primarily sent out to Idexx overnight. We frequently perform in-house ear cytology. Skin scrapes, and tape preps. 

We have 2 RVTs, one full time, one part time. We have 3 trained VAs, one is cross trained for reception. 1 full time receptionist. 

 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Shifts- Monday 8am-6pm, Tuesday 8am-6pm (Surgery in the morning, appointments in the afternoon), Wednesday 9am-6pm (Surgery in the morning, appointments in the afternoon), Thursday 8am-5pm, Friday 8am-5pm. Lunch breaks provided. 

Students will work with our scheduled appointments, and perform surgeries that correspond with their experience level, and have learning opportunities for procedures they are less familiar with. Students may perform exams prior to a staff dvm performing theirs, discuss their findings together, and make recommendations for care and discuss those with owners. Students may also perform callbacks to follow up on patient care/exams/lab results.
