Description of Elective Experience

Full experience encompassing the day-to-day workload as a GP veterinarian in NYC; This includes but is not limited to: Learning how to go about the regular flow of appointments, discussing differentials with other DVMs and coming up with a treatment plan, gaining confidence in client communication skills and understanding of preventative medicine.

 

Cadaver based wet-lab (barring time availability) going over routine procedures such as OVH and neuter; while also gaining some hands on experience with other surgeries that a GP veterinarian should be able to perform, if need be, such as: enucleation, R&A, enterotomy, splenectomy, amputation, and so forth.

 

 

 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Full GP staff of 5 DVMs total and several experienced technicians and handlers

Radiology, ultrasound, surgical suite / dentistry

 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student will be expected to shadow all appointments, gather history, perform a physical exam of their own, present any findings to the DVM and use these to come up with a list of differentials. From there, student shall be expected to provide options in regards to baseline diagnostic testing and treatment if deemed necessary. Student should also have a basic understanding of preventative medicine as it pertains to SA general practice.
