Grady Veterinary Hospital, OH

Description of Elective Experience

We have a 15 doctor 24 hour AAHA hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.  We operate as a general practice during the day then transition to an emergency hospital at night and on the weekend.  We also have an internal medicine specialist and a surgeon working here.

We try to expose the externs to all we have to offer so we have them do some GP day shift, spend some time in surgery and also work some nights and/or weekends to get exposure to the ER side of the hospital.  If their interests lie elsewhere, we will accommodate that as long as they fulfill the requirements of the externship.  We try to expose them to everything the first week then let them pick and choose where they want to spend the rest of their time.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We have 25 RVT's  and 2 medical technicians who run our in house lab.  We have complete in house laboratory capabilities, digital x-ray and digital dental x-ray, 2 high speed dental workstations, 2 ultrasound machines, a CT scanner , endoscopy, ICU and isolation area, 2 Snyder oxygen cage units and 3 well equipped surgical suites.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

We expect them to work 40 hours/week.  This may be five 8 hour days or 3 overnights(12 hour shifts) or 4 10 hour shifts(second shift).

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info)

If needed , we can pay for an extended stay hotel to accommodate externship.
