Grace Animal Hospital (Bridgeport, WV)

Description of Elective Experience

Grace Animal Hospital is an AAHA-accredited, small animal and avian/exotic hospital located in beautiful Bridgeport, West Virginia. We are a full service, well-equipped, and progressive 4-doctor practice. While most of the patients we see are canine and feline, we also see small mammals, reptiles, birds and poultry.

Grace Animal Hospital is privately-owned and family-centered with no on-call, overnight, or weekend responsibilities. Our culture is one of compassion, collaboration, thoroughness, and building strong bonds with our clients and their pets. Our entire team is committed to providing the highest standards of veterinary care and exceptional client communication and service.

Our externship program offers veterinary students the chance to work alongside experienced and collaborative veterinarians in a private practice setting.  You’ll receive one-on-one mentorship while building critical clinical skills such as history taking, physical exams, diagnostic interpretation, treatment planning, anesthesia protocols, and end-of-life care discussions. We will also tailor the externship focus to the individual, helping you develop skills in areas of personal interest or areas where you feel you need more experience.  You will also participate in morning rounds discussions, and be involved in case management for both in-patients and out-patients.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our hospital is well staffed and operates in a friendly, no-drama environment. Most of our technicians have been with the practice for many years and continue to grow professionally. We are in the process of building a brand new facility, which will bring additional equipment and features such as CT and fluoroscopy.

Our current hospital features the following:

  • Digital radiography + digital dental radiography
  • On-site ultrasound
  • Soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries
  • Integrative and holistic medicine: Acupuncture, herbal therapy, cold laser therapy
  • Avian and exotic medicine
  • Cloud-based EzyVet + digital whiteboard
Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students will be expected to be at the practice four days per week between the hours of 8am and 5:30pm. At this time, we are not open on Saturdays or Sundays.

Some of your time will be spent shadowing our staffed doctors, and some of it will be working on your own, researching cases and participating in case discussions. You will have the opportunity to participate in surgical and dental procedures, diagnostic ultrasound, perform physical examinations, administer treatments, and be involved in client communications.
