Attention:

The Colorado Workers' Compensation Act requires student interns to be covered by workers' compensation insurance. Ohio State is not able to add students to its institutional workers' compensation policy. Prior to scheduling an externship in Colorado, students must work with their externship supervisor to ensure that Colorado worker's compensation insurance requirements will be met. Proof of worker's compensation coverage must be sent to Dr. Emma Read for verification. If a student is not covered by a worker's compensation policy for their externship they will not earn academic credit for the rotation. Description of Elective Experience

The Why:

The Who:

  • You are a veterinary student who wants to gain experience in a high-quality small animal practice, has a positive outlook and loves connecting with clients (even if it still makes you nervous), and is ready to jump in and grab opportunities to learn as they come your way. Our externship program is open to vet students in any stage of their education.

 

The What:

  • Our extern program relies on student-driven learning to improve your clinical skills and, for those who are interested, your business acumen as well. In addition to shadowing our doctors during appointments and assisting with surgeries, we may ask you to research a medical topic and present to our team or join us at a community event to connect with new clients.
  • We trust your school to prepare you for the NAVLE. We want to help prepare you to be a happy, productive practitioner of veterinary medicine and an important member of your community. We also enjoy helping students with their own extracurricular goals, such as completing your VBMA Honors Portfolio.

The Where, When, and How:

  • We host externs year-round for 2-4 weeks per student. Please contact us at least 60 days prior to your externship start date, and the sooner the better.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We  have 2 hospitals with 6 DVMS at each hospital.  We host a variety of specialists including mobile internists, radiologists, surgeons, cardiologists, and rehab specialists.  Many of our DVMS help coach the third year veterinary communication courses at CSU.  We have 2 medical team and 1 receptionist on the floor per DVM.   

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

We ask students to be in the hospital to shadow/ receive hands on learning 40 hours a week.  We are open Monday -Friday 7-6; Sat 8-noon and will discuss with the student what works best for their learning style.
