Fredericktown Veterinary Clinic, OH

Description of Elective Experience

We are a mixed animal practice (65% small, 20% equine, 15% large animal) with ambulatory and in-house large animal. The doctors have various niches, offering the ability to shadow primarily small animal, more focus on equine, or more focus on large animal. We work with multiple rescues in the area as well as do the sick work and surgeries for the county dog shelter.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We offer digital radiography (including large animal, soon including dental), ultrasound, in-house orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, standing large animal surgery, hospitalization, and mostly in-house labwork (CBC, chem, UA). We have designated receptionists and an extremely knowledgable technical staff.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students will have the ability to work office hours and, if desired, emergency hours. M-F 8-5 would be expected, staying until close (6 or 7pm) and Saturdays 8-12 are also available. Emergency calls are taken by the clinic all weeknights, and large animal emergencies for the county are covered every 4th weekend. Depending on student comfort level, elective can be tailored to the amount of shadowing/hands-on desired. Students can expect to perform animal handling, sample collecting, radiograph taking, completing physical exams, assisting large animal procedures, basic surgical procedures.
