Franklin Animal Clinic, IN

Description of Elective Experience

Franklin Animal Clinic is a full-service small animal veterinary practice. We are a 13-doctor practice and serve as the central hub for five affiliated veterinary clinics, giving students exposure to a high-volume, multi-doctor environment. Students will gain hands-on experience under the supervision of licensed veterinarians, including physical exams, diagnostics, case management, client communication, and daily practice workflow. The elective includes a dedicated surgery day where students will shadow the surgeon and observe a variety of surgical procedures. Students may also perform feline spay and neuter surgeries under direct supervision, as appropriate to their skill level.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

The clinic is equipped with multiple exam rooms and dedicated surgical suites, along with in-house laboratory capabilities and advanced diagnostic imaging, including digital X-ray, ultrasound, and CT. The practice also utilizes anesthesia and patient monitoring equipment and standard medical and surgical instrumentation appropriate for small animal general practice.

Students are supervised by licensed veterinarians and supported by the clinical team during all activities, with educational support provided through direct case involvement, observation, and discussion as part of routine patient care and hospital workflow.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students will work four 10-hour days per week and report to the supervising veterinarian. Students will support veterinarians with case management, treatment plans, and routine patient care. Students will support doctors working general practice, wellness, and urgent care appointments. Some days will be spent in surgery, shadowing the surgeon and assisting in various procedures. Hands-on surgical participation will include performing feline spay and neuter procedures under the direct surgeon supervision.
