Description of Elective Experience

Four State Veterinary Services is a 100% ambulatory food and fiber animal practice servicing portions of four states in the mid Atlantic region. Externs will spend the day visiting farms across the practice area and working with beef and dairy cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, llamas, alpacas, camels, and poultry. Appointments will include preventative medicine and wellness appointments and sick annual appointments and students will experience a wide variety of cases across multiple species.

Four State Veterinary Services is owned  operated by a solo veterinary specialist, holding board certification with the American Board of Veteribary Practitioners (Food Animal Practice). As a 100% ambulatory practice, visits are conducted out of a truck and portable veterinary clinic. Aside from the basic equipment, necessary for veterinary practice,  ultrasound is a common element to the practice and used for reproductive examination as well as other diagnostic purposes. Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students are expected to attend calls and be active participants in medical and surgical procedures Monday through Friday. The day typically begins at 8 AM and ends when appointments are complete, generally around 6 to 7 PM. No emergency duty is expected,  however students are welcome to attend emergency calls on weekends and after hours if they would like.
