Description of Elective Experience

Mixed animal practice including small animal general practice, exotic species and pocket pets, and large animal work ranging from show animals to large production groups. Students can elect to ride with vets in ambulatory setting through the day, or participate at the clinic in both medicine and surgical workup.

Six veterinarians. Support staff includes 10 veterinary technicians, 4 receptionists, groomer, kennel assistants.

Digital X-Ray, ultrasound, surgical laser, therapeutic laser, ultrasonic dental machine, large and small ruminant breeding soundness equipment, equine power dental float, mobile chute

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students are encouraged to participate to the fullest of their abilities, from shadowing to obtain experience in animal handling all the way to performing veterinary procedures including injections, blood draws, tracheal intubation, and surgical procedures if deemed appropriate by the veterinarian. Days are generally 7:30am-5:00pm, but may start earlier for dairy herd checks. The clinic operates 5 1/2 days each week with Saturday morning being optional for externship students. Emergency services are provided after hours and a student may elect to participate with the emergency veterinarian, but is not required to do so at any time.
