Description of Elective Experience

The program offers the chance to see and where needed, work with a wide range of domestic and wild animals in South Africa. Activities are presented and overseen by professionals and veterinarians. During the program students will learn about conservation and the role the wildlife veterinarian plays in the conservation section. Practical instruction will be provided, lectures given and in-field training provided. The program move every few days to allow students to see and experience different areas and animals while learning from different educators and professionals at each venue. Hands-on, in-filed studies are the aim.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Each group will have their own EcoLife Expeditions guide trained and in control of the group. All accommodation (ranging from hotels, lodges, private bush camps and camp grounds) is provided and where needed, camping equipment is provided. All camp grounds are fenced with hot and cold running water, flushing toilets and electricity points. A lot of the venues have WiFi but some are remote with selective reception. Study material are given to students. Students are required to take notes during lectures or where needed. The EcoLife guides will answer or source information as questioned. Students are free to interact and ask questions from the professionals offering the activities, lectures and skills training.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students will be informed of their daily program by their guides the day before. Students are required to adhere to the times set by their guides. During the day time hours, students are required to follow the program as planned for the day. Any activity the students feel uncomfortable with, he/she may sit out. All lectures must be attended and all students must go to the venues planned for each day. They are not to stay behind. All activities are in group form and under the guidance of their EcoLife guide. Evenings are free time where students are given the time to relax, socialize and discuss the activities of the day. Some days will involve long hours of work and interaction where other days might be less - as the program allow. Students are required to follow instruction, regulations and protocols as required for each activity offered.

The program allow for the group to move every few days. The program cost include accommodation, meals, transport and activity costs. The accommodation offered will range from hotels, lodges, private bush camps and camping. All accommodation offered are safe and have access to full amenities like electricity, running hot and cold water, fenced and patrolled. Most venues have swimming pools, shops, laundry facilities and are a short drive from the nearest town (where there are more shops, hospitals, etc).
