Our externs will experience the typical caseload of a well-run, multi-doctor private practice. Under the supervision of a veterinarian, externs will provide wellness care, gather patient histories, perform physical examinations, develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans, assist in the management of medical cases, scrub into surgery, develop client communication skills, and generate appropriate medical records. Established since 2007, we Eagle's Nest Animal Hospital provides quality veterinary medicine to the King George, VA community. We have treated over 10,000 patients with the same level of care we would expect for our own pets. In 2022, we moved into our brand new 8,500 sq. ft. building where we have electronic records, a Digital X-ray (new system in 2022), Heska in-house lab equipment (chemistry, hematology, endocrinology, EPOC) which allows us to do 90% of blood work done in-house, an Ultrasound – Doppler, and a well-equipped surgery suite. We are a fun, supportive, and team-oriented small animal hospital. Our doctor to support staff ratio is 1:8+.
Externships experiences are tailored to the unique interests and needs of each individual student. Our externship opportunities are available in 1 to 4 week terms. The hospital hours each week are Monday through Thursday, 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, and Fridays 8:30 AM to 4 PM. As stated previously, under the supervision of a veterinarian, externs will provide wellness care, gather patient histories, perform physical examinations, develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans, assist in the management of medical cases, scrub into surgery, develop client communication skills, and generate appropriate medical records. This is a hands-on, collaborative experience with a lot of actual support from our staff.
Students that are given the opportunity to extern with us will receive a $200/day stipend to help cover the cost of housing and meals. Students are responsible for finding housing, but if they have trouble finding housing, they can reach out to the Student Ambassador, Alexa, for help. Students may contact the Student Ambassador, Alexa, at alexa@eaglesnestanimalhospital.com with their resume if applying, or if they have any questions about the externship opportunity.
