Description of Elective Experience

Dove Valley Animal Hospital is part of AZPetVet, a locally owner operated family of 21 small animal general practice hospitals. Dove Valley sees dogs, cats, reptiles, amphibians, and pocket pets. Preventative care as well as urgent care cases are seen daily. Preventative care surgeries, dentals, advanced soft tissue and orthopedic procedures are performed in clinic. The student(s) would be invited to participate in consults and surgery of the various species while always under direct supervision and guidance of a DVM mentor. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

All of our 21 hospitals host externs from our local veterinary college, Midwestern, regularly and the staff and doctors are prepared to train and educate. The student(s) will have access to computers with internet access and textbooks.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Responsibilities and expectations will be communicated at the start of the externship block with continued communication during the externship. The student will work approximately 40 hours per week with flexibility to accommodate their scheduling needs. The hospital hours of operation are M-F 7:30-7 and S-S 8-3. The student will be able to shadow in consults, discuss medical decisions, treatments plans, review diagnostics, listen in to phone calls, gain technical skills, scrub into surgery, perform surgery pending the students' comfort and case load, etc.
