Description of Elective Experience

Students shadow senior clinicians during daily rounds, for appointments and procedures. Students encouraged to participate in case management discussion with clinicians, perform physical examinations, participate in procedures when able, and are expected to take advantage of our in house library and online resource library to deepen their knowledge and develop insight into the cases they are seeing. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Fully equipped surgical suites for soft tissue, orthopedic, laparoscopic, and ophthalmologic procedures. CT, MRI, and Ultrasound are all on site as well as digital radiography. Endoscopic suite for GI procedures. Full in house laboratory, POC ultrasound available for general hospital use. Highly trained technical staff and excellent lay-support staff. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Staying for the work day for the service they are shadowing, but generally 8 hours per day. Shifts can be on weekends or overnights if arranged. Students shadow a single clinician or several (depending on the service) and are encouraged to follow cases as they move through the hospital.
