Description of Elective Experience

The student will act as the veterinarian at a general practice clinic that services small and exotic animals.  The student will gain experience with annual/preventative medicine appointments, sick appointments and recheck appointments.  The student will assist or be guided through scheduled surgeries to include dental cleanings, ovariohysterectomies, castrations, mass removals and possibly other soft tissue surgeries. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We are equipped with in clinic diagnostics (CBC, CHEM, cPL, proBNP, Heartworm, Idexx imagyst, digital radiology, ultrasound) 

Our staffing includes 2 veterinarians and 12 support staff to include licensed VTs. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student will be in clinic 4 days a week to total 40 hours.  They will be given at least 1 hour for lunch.  Our hours are 8AM to 6PM, Monday thru Friday.  We are closed on weekends. 

The student will act as the veterinarian and will be responsible for appointments, treatment plans, records etc for each patient they are assigned.  The veterinarian (medical director) will guide the student through the appointments. The student will always be under the direct supervision of a veterinarian.
