Desert Pines Equine, NV

Description of Elective Experience

Students at Desert Pines Equine are exposed to a wide variety of cases, from routine vaccine appointments to exploratory colic surgery. Depending on the student's comfort and experience, they are invited to take active participation in patient examinations, treatments, and procedures. DPE is the only surgical referral center in southern Nevada, and provides service to all disciplines and breeds of horses.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Desert Pines Equine employs 7 veterinarians, including a board-certified equine surgeon, a residency-trained equine surgeon, and a residency-trained equine internist. Support staff include two LVTs, numerous VTIT (Vet Technician In Training, a Nevada designation), and several veterinary assistants.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students will be assigned to a doctor to shadow/support each day, and will be given on call shifts and nights off (number of days on/off depends on the length of the externship). They are permitted to perform procedures such as catheter placement, medication administration, etc. under the supervision of a doctor or technician. They will be asked to assist the staff with morning and evening treatments, and may be asked to provide additional assistance with treatment after hours depending on the needs of the clinic.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info)

DPE can provide housing to one student. The room is on-site and can be used at no charge to the student. Students are responsible for providing their own transportation to and from the clinic. If students drive themselves to DPE, there is on-site parking available, also at no charge.
