Description of Elective Experience

This is an opportunity for veterinary students to be involved in the daily activities of a solo equine practice working with Sport horses,Western Pleasure and work horses.  Daily cases include lameness evaluation, reproduction, medine and emergency medicine and surgery.  I have been licensed to practice for 31 years. I am a graduate of The University of Florida (1987), completed a medicine/surgical internship at Rood an Riddle Equine Hospital (1988) and an Equine Surgery Residency Program at The Ohio State University (1988-1991), (Diplomate-LA ACVS) and spent five years (2004-2009) as an Assistant Professor in Equine Ambulatory Service, OSU-Columbus.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Ambulatory equine pratice setting: Digital Radiographic and Ultrasound Imaging.  Portable Serum Amyloid A and Lactate. Endoscopy.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The student should understand that the time spent working on a daily basis varies depending upon case load.  I generally work 8-5 Monday through Friday and Saturday mornings by appointment. The great majority of the case load envolves ambulatory lameness examinations, medicine cases, reproductive cases, and field surgery.  The participation level of the student will depend upon their clinical skills and clients willingness to allow student participation. There will be assigned reading and review of pertinent journal articles relevent to observed cases.  There will be didactic interaction with regard to management of lameness, field emergencies, diagnostic imaging, wound healing, etc.
