Dairyland Veterinary Service (Casco, WI)

Description of Elective Experience

The student will be riding with 1 of 4 veterinarians that work at the clinic. The clinic works with 90% dairy cattle, 5 % beef cattle and 5% small ruminants. The clinic is entirely ambulatory and the student will be on approximately 3-4 farms per day. She will have opportunities to palpate everyday of the week and use an ultrasound for pregnancy diagnosis and calf thoracic ultrasound. We also provide extensive sick cow work, and perform a high number of surgeries per week that she will be able to assist with. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

4 Veterinarians, 2 office staff, ultrasound for student use. Brick and mortar office, 4 vehicles for ambulatory services 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The student is expected to spend approximately 8 hours a day with us for every weekday. They are welcome to ride with any emergency calls during the evenings or weekends. She will be allowed to participate to whichever level both parties feel comfortable. The student will be there to learn and practice skills, but she won’t be depended on for support.
