Description of Elective Experience

8 Doctor, food animal exclusive(95% dairy) veterinary practice located in east central Wisconsin where we provide mobile services to clients in a 5 county area.   Our clients range in size from 50-8000 cows and represent some of the most productive and well managed dairies in Wisconsin.    

Students will experience riding along daily with staff veterinarians and assisting in services provided.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Dairy Doctors consists of 8 veterinarians, 3 veterinary assistants, a lead receptionist and a business manager.

Our staff veterinarians offer many specialty services including:   advanced reproduction/embryo transfer, calf lung ultrasound, records analysis, team meetings, employee trainings, milk quality consultation, peer groups, protocol development and educational meetings.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students will ride daily with one of the staff veterinarians and will have the opportunity to gain experience with several of the veterinarians through the externship.    Morning start times may vary from 5am-8am depending on the scheduled work for that particular day.    Students will be made aware of scheduling 1-2 days in advance.    Most days will conclude in the mid to late afternoon.

Students may be able to participate in evening emergencies calls if interested.

Students will be allowed to participate in daily work as much as possible and their skill level and preparation allows.
