Cumberland Veterinary Clinic is a busy, privately owned small animal practice in Central Pennsylvania offering veterinary students a hands-on learning experience in general practice, surgery, dentistry, diagnostic medicine, and preventive care.
One of the things that sets our practice apart is our extensive exotic animal caseload. In addition to dogs and cats, our doctors routinely see birds, rabbits, reptiles, pocket pets, small mammals, chickens, and other exotic companion animals, providing students with valuable exposure beyond what many general practices offer.
Externs are encouraged to participate in patient workups, physical examinations, diagnostics, radiology, anesthesia, surgery, dentistry, and client communication while working alongside experienced veterinarians and licensed veterinary technicians. Our goal is to provide a supportive, educational environment that builds confidence and prepares students for a successful career in veterinary medicine.
Cumberland Veterinary Clinic is staffed by three experienced veterinarians, licensed veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, and client service representatives who are committed to creating a supportive learning environment for veterinary students.
Our facility is equipped with in-house laboratory equipment, digital radiography, dental radiography, surgical and dental suites, ultrasound, and anesthetic monitoring equipment. Students will gain experience utilizing these resources while participating in diagnostics, anesthesia, surgery, dentistry, and medical case management.
Externs work closely with our veterinarians and support staff throughout the day, allowing for individualized teaching, case discussions, and exposure to a diverse caseload that includes dogs, cats, and a wide variety of exotic companion animals.
Externship schedules are flexible and will be coordinated with the student's school requirements and our clinic's schedule. Students should expect to work during normal business hours, Monday through Friday.
Students are encouraged to actively participate in the daily operation of the clinic. Responsibilities may include observing and performing physical examinations, assisting with patient restraint, diagnostic procedures, radiology, anesthesia, surgery, dentistry, laboratory procedures, and medical record review, as appropriate for the student's level of training and university guidelines.
Our externship is designed to be a hands-on educational experience rather than a shadowing-only rotation. Students are encouraged to ask questions, discuss cases with our veterinarians, and take an active role in patient care under direct supervision.
