Creekside Animal Clinic (Norton, OH)

Description of Elective Experience

The elective externship at Creekside Animal Clinic will provide students with hands-on experience in a fast-paced companion animal general practice. They will work alongside experienced veterinarians and the medical team, gaining exposure to preventative care, wellness and sick-patient examinations, diagnostics, surgery, dentistry, medical record documentation, client communication, and case management. The experience is designed to strengthen clinical knowledge, decision-making skills, and confidence as students prepare for graduation and entry into veterinary practice.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Students will work with and under the direct supervision of six licensed veterinarians and experienced veterinary staff including RVTs and veterinary assistants. Education resources include one-on-one clinical instruction, case discussions, mentoring, medical record review, and diagnostic interpretation. Students will have opportunities to observe and work alongside Creekside’s clinicians during surgery and dentistry procedures. Equipment includes digital radiograph chemistry, cbc, in-house cytology, urinalysis, anesthesia monitoring devices, anesthesia machines, doppler blood pressure, and ultrasound.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students will complete approximately 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday with one Saturday. They will begin the externship by shadowing veterinarians to become familiar with the clinic workflow.  As appropriate to their level of training and under direct supervision, they will progressively participate in physical examinations, patient restraint, sample collection, diagnostics procedures, anesthesia and surgical observation, dentistry, medical record documentation, treatment planning discussion, and client communication.  Students are expected to actively engage in case discussions, ask questions, maintain professionalism, and follow all clinic policies and safety procedures.
