Creek Valley Veterinary Services, LLC, OH

Description of Elective Experience

Students will experience the life of a newly minted solo rural mixed large animal practitioner.  This will include being immersed and engaged on regular farm calls as well as involved in how as a solo practitioner the business is handled and being expanded.  Farm calls consist of around 70% equine cases and 30% mixed large animal with the majority of that being beef cattle clients.  Students will be expected to be heavily involved in taking histories, performing species appropriate physical exams, creating problem and differential diagnostic lists, deciding on diagnostic plans, and executing treatment plans.  They are also expected as they become comfortable to be involved with the client comunicaton and case follow up.  Emergency service is offered and students are invited and encouraged to participate when possible.  Housing is available for students that wish to stay.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Reproductive, abdominal & musculoskeletal ultrasound, digital radiography, power dental equipment, surgical supplies for in field surgeries, SAA monitor, lactate meter, IgG sidekick, referral laboratory services, cloud based practice management software sytem (ezyvet), pro-stride injections.

Staffing is actively expanding but at this time is only 1 doctor practice with no current support staff.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Typical call days start between 8am-9am Monday through Thursday with the goal of finishing by 5pm although as availability allows emergency services are provided for clients only.  Fridays are typically left open for urgent/ emergent cases, office work, and case follow up, although admittedly often calls are scheduled especially during busier times of the year.  Saturday and Sundays are left strictly for emergencies only, students are encouraged to join on emergencies & on the weekends although this is not required.  We expect our students to be actively involved and transparent about their areas of stengths and weakness, we desire for this experience to be practical and hands on but that requires constant transparent communication between both doctor and student to be the most successful.  Students that demonstrate the abilities to perform safe and correct species specific physical exams will be given lots of opportunities to "take the reigns" to carry out diagnostic and treatment plans.  Those that do no demonstrate this ability will be taught how to do this with the goal of by the end of externship being able to do so confidently and safely.
