CountryChase Veterinary Hospital, FL

Description of Elective Experience

The primary purpose of our Veterinary Student Externship is to provide a hands-on learning experience for 3rd and 4th year students who are enrolled in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program. The program is flexible and can be scheduled in 1- to 4-week blocks, depending on the extern’s availability. We feel that the students who possess an open mind and a willingness to learn will benefit the most from our externship.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

CountryChase Veterinary opened its doors in Westchase in early 1998. Our exponential growth over the next seven years led to our move in 2005 to our state-of-the-art, 5,000-square-foot freestanding facility which includes preserved wetlands. Our carefully designed clinic provides clients and their pets with the most comfortable environment possible for medical care. We currently have a boarded dermatologist on staff and our lead veterinarian has decades of experience, both love to mentor and work with our student externs!

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The Veterinary Student Extern is responsible for performing inpatient and outpatient medical care under the direct supervision of our veterinary staff. They will be expected to perform in-house diagnostic tests (hematology, chemistry, and radiology) with competence, perform routine client education, and to assist in surgical procedures.
