Description of Elective Experience

The Lakefield Veterinary externship is designed to allow students to practice the problem solving, technical and communication skills they have acquired during their clinical rotations. The goal of the externship is to familiarize the student with the practice of veterinary medicine in the private sector and to provide valuable exposure to primary care medical and surgical services, client communication and practice management.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Direct supervision of a licensed Cornall Center veterinarian. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Introduction to the hospital, observation time, lunch with owner, doctor shadowing - entering exam rooms, discussion of cases, fluid therapy for a hospitalized case. Participation in physical exams, feedback.
