Companion Care Animal Hospital, OH

Description of Elective Experience

We are a well established, independently owned hospital located in southeast Ohio.   We are a general practice that sees dogs, cats, and small mammals (rabbits, rodents, ferrets, guinea pigs) for routine preventative care, urgent care and some emergencies.  We perform surgery 3 days a week and as needed on emergency basis. Wellness care is emphasized and we take the time to try to educate our clients.  The student will spend time with wellness visits, sick visits, urgent visits and some emergencies.

We see patients 6 days a week. Monday - Friday 8am-5pm and Saturday 9am-1pm.  Surgery is on Monday, Wednesday & Friday.  Typically there are 2 doctors on at most times.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our hospital has 5 exam rooms, a large treatment area, a surgery suite with 2 tables with electrocautery, an ICU/surgery recovery area, runs/boarding area, isolation area, and office space.  We have a digital x-ray area  and a wet table for dental procedures.  We also have a new ultrasound machine.  We run in house fecal exam by centrifugation, urinalysis, and skin & ear cytology.

We have 3 full time DVM's and 12 staff members including 1 registered technician and 4 very experienced assistants.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The student will have the opportunity to shadow during any of our normal hours.  I would suggest 35-40 hours per week and they could observe any of the doctors.  They will observe and participate in wellness visits doing physical exams, drawing blood, giving vaccines and educating clients.  Sick or urgent visits could also include, cytology sampling and reading skin & ear smears, urinalysis, making diagnosis and treatment plans, placing IV catheters and deciding on fluid therapy, and calculating drug doses.  Surgery would involve assisting the DVM and possibly performing some procedures under the supervision of the DVM if appropriate.  The student may accompany the DVM into the exam rooms and then perform their own exam and treatment plan.  They may also assist in x-ray and ultrasound and other in house diagnostics.
