Companion Animal Veterinary Hospital, CO

Attention:

The Colorado Workers' Compensation Act requires student interns to be covered by workers' compensation insurance. Ohio State is not able to add students to its institutional workers' compensation policy. Prior to scheduling an externship in Colorado, students must work with their externship supervisor to ensure that Colorado worker's compensation insurance requirements will be met. Proof of worker's compensation coverage must be sent to Dr. Emma Read for verification. If a student is not covered by a worker's compensation policy for their externship they will not earn academic credit for the rotation. Description of Elective Experience

Companion Animal Veterinary Hospital is a small animal practice located in Centennial, Colorado. We have been a staple in the community for over 43 years and as such have a very strong and loyal client base. We offer a full spectrum of wellness, medical, and surgical services. Our mission is to educate and partner with pet owners so they can confidently make the best choices for their pets at every stage of life.

Students will train directly with our skilled veterinarians, gaining practical experience in both medicine and surgery while also strengthening their ability to communicate effectively with clients. This program is structured to build clinical competence and prepare participants for a successful transition into their careers as veterinarians. When possible, we also aim to support individual areas of interest based on case availability and scheduling.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We are a continually advancing practice that keeps pace with modern veterinary standards by expanding both our services and technology. With digital dental imaging, digital radiology, ultrasound, tonometry, therapeutic laser treatments, and AI-supported dictation tools, our team can deliver precise diagnostics while giving our doctors more time for hands-on patient care.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students are expected to be present in the clinic a minimum of four days per week from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. While we are open weekends, these days are not required but can be added if the extern wishes. The student will shadow all doctors, with the Medical Director serving as their primary point of contact.

Externs will participate in appointments, surgeries, and anesthesia to gain real-time, hands-on experience with day-to-day veterinary care. They will help develop treatment strategies, assess medical conditions, and review radiographs, including dental and standard images.

Students will also practice core technical procedures—such as IV catheter placement, venipuncture, and injections—to strengthen their clinical skills and confidence.
