Description of Elective Experience

Work alongside Dr Frank McHugh our founding DVM, current medical director, and chief surgeon. Dr. McHugh does surgery, dentals and we see a lot of dermatology cases. Students could possibly be part of the following surgeries: spay, neuter, pyometra, umbilical and inguinal hernia repair, bladder stone removal, foreign body removal surgery, eye enucleation, cherry eye surgery, mass removals small and large.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Our Practice has 3 Full time DVM, Dr. Frank McHugh graduated from NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine and has 24 years experience running a practice with a stellar reputation in the community.  Dr. McHugh does a lot of surgeries that are more complex than the average spay and neuter.  Dr. Mindy Feldman graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine with 22 years experience and Dr. Dustin Pascal graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine 4 years ago. Our Practice manager, Amy McHugh, has her PharmD and worked at the NC State University college of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Teaching Hospital Pharmacy for 8 years prior to running our practice. While there she worked with many veterinary students in their clinicals assisting and teaching them on the different drugs we had available and consulting on doses.  We have 4 full time technicians and 4 CSR's.  We have access to VIN and the knowledge she will pick up for our highly intelligent doctors all sharing a passion for excellent care for the patient and great client relations.  We work as a team and provide a spectrum of care. We have a fully digital x-ray machine with the I pacs system.  We also have a dental x-ray machine, and dental ultrasonic machine to perform comprehensive dental care. Students will work alongside Dr. McHugh whom loves to teach new students.  He took Dr. Pascal and mentored him on a daily basis until now 2 years later, Dr. Pascal only comes to him for the more complex cases.  Dr McHugh is still teaching his surgical skills to Dr. Pascal as Dr. McHugh shows him more procedures all the time as they present themselves.  Dr Pascal has thrived as the mentee, because he has been open to learning as well as reading and learning outside of work which has worked to his benefit.   One should never stop learning.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

We expect students to work alongside Dr. McHugh, he goes by Dr. Fritz.  We are open 4 & 1/2 days a week so we expect students to follow the schedule of the DVM's which works out to be 40 hours per week.  We will allow them to be in the appointments, and work as an extension of Dr. Fritz.
