Description of Elective Experience

The extern will be exposed to many educational activities which will include:

General practice of clinical medicine and surgery, discussions of therapeutic decisions, periodic evaluation of extern, preventive medicine programs, business management guidelines, attendance of local association meetings, if possible, advanced pain management, and behavioral strategies including fear-free practices.    

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Clyde Park Veterinary Clinic is a full-service veterinary hospital for dogs and cats. The facility includes a reception area with lobby, 4 exam rooms, a dog ward, a cat ward, a treatment/lab area, a double surgical suite, digital radiology (including dental), ultrasound, laser surgery, and a therapy laser. We use Idexx for our reference lab and Heska for our in-house lab equipment. We have 3.25 FTE doctors, 4 Licensed Veterinary Technicians,  3 Approved Veterinary Assistants, 2 Veterinary Assistants, 3 Receptionists, 1 Certified Veterinary Practice Manager/Approved Veterinary Assistant, and 1 Professional Groomer. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Activities will include physical examination and evaluation of both outpatients and emergent patients. Exposure to a variety of soft tissue and orthopedic procedures, as well as the opportunity to perform certain surgical procedures, will also be included.
