Clarke Animal Hospital (Spring Lake, MI)

Description of Elective Experience

We are a 4/5 DVM small animal general practice in Michigan.  We do appointments, surgeries, urgent care visits each day.  While primarily cat and dog, we also so exotics ranging from snakes, bearded dragons, birds, turtles, etc.  Externs have the opportunity to meet, shadow and work with our DVMs with different experience levels and different interests.  We do a variety of surgeries from common spays, neuters and dentals all the way to exploratory surgery/splenectomies/MRITs/amputations/exotic surgery/etc.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Staffing: most days we have 3 DVMs on and plenty of support staff.  Every day each DVM has 2 support staff paired with them, we have an LVT doing tech column appts, and we have an assistant or LVT in a float position ready to jump in where ever needed.  Normally one DVM is in surgery and the others are seeing appointments.  As far as equipment, we have: ultrasound, digital xray, digital dental xray, Idexx lab machines, sedivue, tonopen, blood pressure, digital anesthesia monitoring machines, electrocautery, suction.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

We are available for students up to 40 hours a week as they need.  Each day we see appointments from 9:00a to 6:00p.  Surgery days start around 8:15a.  Most of our externs do alot of shadowing including in surgery, performing exams on patients for themselves and talking through what they find with the DVM they are with.  Often they come up with a treatment plan they would do and bounce those ideas off of the DVM seeing the case.  Basically a place for them to see a case from start to finish and think of what they would do if it was their patient.
