Description of Elective Experience

Student will be shadowing one of our two experienced doctors through their day. This includes wellness and sick appointments, surgeries, dentistry, and drop off appointments. Students will have opportunities to review patient records, gather patient histories, practice physical examinations, create problem lists and generate differentials, create treatment plans and review diagnostics. We routinely perform in house and send out blood testing, review cytology results (ear, skin, FNA), and perform x-rays. On some rotations, students may be to participate in abdominal ultrasounds or echocardiograms. Students will be able to scrub into and assist with soft tissue surgeries. Students will also be able to participate in dentistry, including reviewing dental pathology and radiographs, observing extractions, and potentially participating in dental extractions (patient dependent with supervising doctor discretion). Both veterinarians are also lead partners/owners so there is opportunity for students to explore a "day in the life" with our practice owners and gain exposure to the business end of the practice if they desire.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We have a tenured and experienced staff of veterinary technicians, assistants, and CSRs. We have digital radiography, digital dental radiography, ultrasound, brand new anesthesia monitoring equipment, microscope and Imagyst, TonoVet, and Bovie radiosurgery unit.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Unless otherwise specified by the university, our students are expected to follow a 35-40 hour work week. Our doctor hours are 8-5 (1 hr lunch) M-F and 8-1 on Sat. A specific schedule will be provided to each student prior to arrival to give them the best mix of surgery and appointment shadowing and experience with each of our two doctors. Our rotation is a blend of shadowing and hand-on experience - we strive to make the student's experience as useful and real as possible, while still ensuring an uninterrupted experience for our clients.
