Description of Elective Experience

The extern student will participate in all aspects of clinical zoo medicine, including physical exams, diagnostics, clinical procedures, necropsies, record keeping, and staff communication. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Animal health team staff includes three veterinarians, four registered veterinary technicians, and a zoo nutritionist. The hospital is well-equipped with ultrasounds, portable digital and dental radiography, endoscopy, in-house clinical laboratory, and PCR laboratory. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students should plan to arrive at the hospital by 8am. Veterinarian hours generally extend to 5:30pm and students are expected to spend at least 5 days at the hospital weekly. The hospital is staffed every day and students are welcome to spend extra days at the hospital if desired. Students are asked to complete a project or presentation by the end of the externship.

Student housing is located directly across the street from the zoo.  Housing is available on a first-come, first-served basis and is not guaranteed but is offered at no cost when available.

No pets are allowed.  Rooms are furnished and WIFI is available.
