Description of Elective Experience

Chippawa Animal Hospital is a companion animal hospital that is nestled in a small community of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. We welcome students to immerse in a 1-week long rotation to learn all about general practice. We pride ourselves on high quality medicine, and compassionate patient care in a very friendly and supportive clinic environment.

  • 2 full time doctors, 3 technicians, 1 practice manager and 2 client care representatives
  • Open Monday to Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm
  • Full in house laboratory (blood and urine machines, microscope)

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The schedule of the student will match the operating hours of the clinic (M-F, 8am-5pm). There are no on-call or overtime shifts required. Students will be encouraged to shadow wellness appointments and sick pet examinations, and participate in client communication when appropriate. They will be involved in case workup (i.e. developing problem lists and differential lists). Students will have the opportunity to practice basic technical skills under supervision, such as venipuncture, taking skin scrapings, acetate tape skin samples, etc.). Students will be allowed to shadow all surgical procedures and dental procedures. Questions, and involvement in cases are always encouraged and welcomed.
