Chino Valley Animal Hospital, AZ

Description of Elective Experience

Progressive general practice primarily seeing dogs and cats, 5% include exotics, livestock and equine. Heavy in surgery and dentistry. We provide day one ready experience and willing to be very hands-on and teach GP and surgery skills (soft tissue and orthopedic). We offer urgent care and emergency during normal business hours.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We have separate CSRs, vet techs, kennel staff and grooming. We try to have 2 techs assigned per doctor. We have  x-ray, ultrasound, dental x-ray, video otoscope, cryotherapy, radiosurgery.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Vet students are 40-45 hours per week which usually reflects as a 4 day work week. The clinic is closed for lunch 12-130 pm, but there is always something to be learning on the floor as well. No overnights or on call. Shadowing verse hands-on depends on the student, but we encourage hands on as it’ll be their job one day. We love facilitating and growing veterinarians, so if there is something that they want to work on, we are here to help! Hours include rounds start at 7:45 am and close at 6 pm.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info)

Depending on the timing, housing might be available. Using furnished finders has brought much help to other externs. Feel free to reach out because one of the doctors may be able to house students. If you need to bring your pet to the hospital during your shift, that’s perfectly fine!
