Chicago Equine Medical Center, IL

Description of Elective Experience

Chicago Equine Medical Center is an equine hospital located in northern Illinois. We serve Chicagoland suburbs as both an ambulatory practice (specializing in sports medicine and performance) and as a referral hospital (supporting local veterinarians for emergencies and surgery). Externs that visit our practice are paired with an ambulatory veterinarian each day, and shadow daily appointments ranging from routine soundness examinations/treatments and preventative care to after hour emergencies and elective surgeries. The goals of the externship are to provide a high level of exposure to broaden the interests and skills of veterinary students. The extern will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, friendly environment. This program should provide the extern with enough clinical exposure to allow a solid foundation to pursue further studies in equine sports medicine.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Chicago Equine is comprised of 5 veterinarians; one of which being a board-certified surgeon, one being certified in acupuncture, and another being certified in veterinary spinal manipulation therapy (chiropractic). Our excellent support staff is comprised of a hospital manager, a billing manager, a technician supervisor, a pharmacy manager, a client service representative/scheduler, and various skilled veterinary assistants. Our hospital has various ambulatory ultrasound and digital radiology units in addition to a nuclear scintigraphy (bone scan) machine and a variety of advanced surgical equipment.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students are expected to shadow all of the veterinarians throughout their stay with us to gain a well-rounded approach to high quality equine care. They will be scheduled Monday – Friday depending on the case load for that week. After-hour emergencies are optional but encouraged if the student is interested. A recent-graduate veterinarian is assigned to each extern for support during their stay with us.
