Carter Veterinary Services is a 4 doctor ambulatory practice with a wide service area. We treat equines along with livestock and small percentage of companion animal. The student will ride along during farm calls, assist in the treatment plans of patients and have the opportunity to discuss each case with the veterinarian. We are located along the coast in southeastern South Carolina. Our clinic services much of the low country between SC and GA.
Carter Veterinary Services provides a collaborative, field-based learning environment supported by experienced veterinarians and skilled support staff committed to student mentorship. The practice offers comprehensive ambulatory livestock and equine services, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in preventative care, lameness evaluations, reproductive work, emergency medicine, and herd health management.
The practice is equipped with modern mobile diagnostic tools, including digital radiography, ultrasound, advanced dental and surgical equipment appropriate for ambulatory care. Students benefit from a diverse caseload across equine and production animal species, exposure to real-world case management, and active participation in client communication and clinical decision-making. The team prioritizes practical skill development, case discussion, and professional growth in a supportive and educational setting.
Externship students are expected to participate in the daily schedule of the practice, typically Monday through Friday from approximately 8:00 AM to 4:00–6:00 PM, depending on case load. Students will actively assist veterinarians in ambulatory appointments, including patient restraint, basic technical procedures, record keeping, and case preparation as appropriate to their level of training.
Students are encouraged to engage in hands-on learning whenever possible, participate in case discussions, and take initiative in client communication and clinical problem-solving under supervision.
