Description of Elective Experience

Student will be assigned to the Medical Director (or senior veterinarian) for the 2-4 week externship.  Housing and stipend of $250.00 per week will be provided. 

It is vital that externs get experience in the following areas:

  • Exam Room client communication
  • performing physical exams with and without the doctor present.  The client will need to be informed and we can have a sign on the door welcoming the 4th year vet student.
  • creating diagnostic plans with the medical director
  • technical skills (catheter placement, cystocentesis, venipuncture, intubation)
  • minor surgery (wound repair, lacerations, small growth removals, closure of OVH/Netuer) under guidance of medical director
  • spays and neuters (if possible with rescue group patients?) under guidance of medical director

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Mon to Friday 9-5

Shadowing and performing tasks, exams with assistant support, technical training with veterinary technicians, surgical and dental training with medical director

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info)

Pets are welcome

additional stipend of $250 per week for living expenses and travel
