Description of Elective Experience

At Care Pets the student will have the opportunity to work with all of the doctors at the practice so that they can see a variety of cases and different points of view on tackling cases.  This will include  GP for dogs and cats, exotics and the rehab service. They will also get to participate in surgery, appointments and hospitalized cases.  The students will also participate in daily discussion of cases with the doctors. Sellerburg Indiana is about 20 minutes from the Louisville metropolitan area so we see a mix of rural and suburban clients.  We practice high quality medicine, but also can provide experience in treating pets with owners in financial hardships.  Depending on the timing of the extern the student maybe able to work with our boarded surgeon or go off site for raptor cases, koi cases or coyote.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Care Pets has 2.5 doctors, with 1 registered technician and 7 veterinary assistants.  We see mainly dogs and cats, but have a doctor that sees exotics. The exotic vet sees pocket pets, raccoons, sugar gliders, reptiles, birds and works with a rehab rehabilitation group and a coyote off-site. We also have a new rehabilitation department that is about 1 year old.  It has a part time rehabilitation veterinarian and certified rehab technician. This service does do acupuncture, chiropractic;underwater tread mill, pt exercises, and therapeutic laser. The GP portion of the practice sees cases in preventative care, senior care, dentistry,dermatology; internal medicine, some behavior cases, some emergencies, end of life care, and surgery. We regularly perform spays, neuters; mass removals, enucleations; cystotomies, exploratories, and and foreign body, ear hematomas; abscess drainage, laceration repairs surgeries.  Our exotics doctor does perform spays and neuters on exotics, dentistry, abscess drainage, mass removals, wound repair, and cloacal blockages. We also have a boarded surgeon that performs surgery at our hospital on request.  So far that typically has been tplos, BOAS and complicated mass removals.  We have both a therapeutic laser and surgical laser.  Our surgery suite includes monitoring equipment ecg; spo2, co2, bp along with doppler bp and fluid therapy.  We have dental radiography, xray and ultrasound.  We also have a tonopen, ophthalmoscope and otoscope.  In house blood machines that can perform 4dx hwt, cbc, chem, lytes, phenobarbital levels, felv, fiv tests, urinalysis, fecals, cytology, and blood smears.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

In order for the student to get a full experience, the student will be at the hospital 4 days a week 8-6pm and at least one Saturday.  

  • Students will be responsible in assisting with each days appointments and surgeries.
  • Students will perform physical exams.
  • Students will develop diagnostic and treatment plans with assistance from lead veterinarian.
  • Students will be allowed to assist in surgeries.
  • When available students will be allowed to perform surgeries on adoptable pets with lead veterinarian supervision.
  • Students will be responsible for charting medical records, client education and treatment.
  • When student is deemed ready by lead vet they will have the opportunity to be primary care responsibility on cases.
