Broken Bow Animal Hospital (Broken Bow, NE)

Description of Elective Experience

Broken Bow Animal Hospital is a three-doctor large animal practice in central Nebraska offering elective experiences for veterinary students looking to gain skills in large animal practice. Our workload is >95% beef cattle with some equine, small ruminant, and the occasional ranch dog or cat.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

We provide an externship binder for all students who extern with us which includes handouts on the major aspects of beef cattle practice.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students are expected to participate and engage in all appointments and calls while on externship. Clinic hours are 8am - 5:30pm Monday-Friday and 8am - noon on Saturdays. Students are expected to help during after hour emergency calls as well. We want our students to jump in and participate to the level of their comfort/experience. This may include performing the majority of a bovine c section, other surgeries, preg checking, neonatal calf care, bull semen testing, etc. Although the student would never be alone without supervision and being checked by veterinarian or staff.
