Bolton Veterinary Hospital is a privately owned, 24-hour general and emergency practice located just outside of Hartford, CT. With a team of nearly 20 veterinarians, three visiting specialists who rotate biweekly, and a staff of highly skilled technicians and support personnel, BVH is a fast-paced environment that handles a high volume of cases while maintaining a strong commitment to quality medicine. Our formal mentorship program and a faculty of experienced clinicians with a genuine passion for teaching make BVH a collaborative workplace where learning and professional growth are central to the culture.
An externship at Bolton Vet offers third and fourth-year veterinary students meaningful, hands-on clinical experience. Students rotate with multiple staff veterinarians and take an active role in the exam room — conducting physical exams, communicating with clients, practicing clinical skills such as venipuncture and ultrasound, interpreting diagnostics, and contributing to treatment planning. Surgical experience includes scrubbing in and assisting with both routine and emergency procedures; students who have completed basic surgical rotations may have the opportunity to perform spays and neuters on feral cats under direct supervision. Time spent in case rounds and working alongside our hospitalist provides valuable exposure to the management of hospitalized and critically ill patients. Given the breadth of our clinical setting, externship rotations are tailored to each student's individual interests, ensuring the experience is as relevant and impactful as possible.
Formal mentorship program
Students are expected to complete a minimum of 40 hours over an externship block of up to two weeks. Students will shadow staff veterinarians while actively participating in case workups, procedures, treatment planning, and surgical procedures as opportunities arise.
