Description of Elective Experience

Externs are exposed to the flow of cases through our emergency service along with tertiary level inpatient management.  They will learn about triage, pain management, and medical management of heart failure, gastrointestinal distress, and organ dysfunction.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

1 DACVECC, 3 DACVIM (SAIM), 2 DACVIM (neurology), 2 DACVS (SA), 3 DACVIM (oncology), 1 DACVO, 1 DACVIM (cardio), 1 DACVA

1 VTS each oncology and IM

Morning hospital wide patient rounds and weekly didactic intern rounds

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Externs are expected to be at the hospital for 40 hours of shadowing.  Typically students choose to either work the weekdays or the weekday swing shifts depending on their level of interest in inpatient vs. ER cases.
