Description of Elective Experience

Externship with the internal medicine service. Will be with either internal medicine doctor and or hospitalist to shadow in hosp transfer cases vs out patient appts. Will take in cases with internist, perform exams, formulate problem lists, ddx and treatment and diagnostic plans.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Internal medicine has total of 5 internists and 1 hospitalist. Usually 2 internist are at location on a given day. Multiple nurses per doctor. We have use of ultrasound, radiology, CT, MRI, scoping and consultation with other specialties (onco, ECC, surgery, neuro, anesthesia).

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student usually work 40 hrs per week, pending whatever schedule req they need to fill. The schedule for IM will be 8am to 4-6pm Mon-Fri. 
Minimal client communicaton will occur during this visit.

Students do have access to medical records.

Students do have possibility to perform procedures if deemed comfortable by the supervising internist.
