Bentley Veterinary Practice PLLC, NY

Description of Elective Experience

Bentley Veterinary Practice, PLLC  (BVP) is a general, large animal practice with a passion for all farm animals. BVP desires to enable and promote a wholesome way of life for the animal as well as its steward. We offer externs the opportunity to experience high quality, ambulatory medicine with a practice area encompassing the beautiful Hudson Valley of New York, extending into Connecticut and Massachusetts.  BVP is dedicated to serving hardworking vocational farmers, estate farmers, and backyard hobbyists. Our mission is to provide superior, large animal veterinary services at affordable prices, to be easily accessible and available, all the while valuing the animal(s) as well as the client. BVP is comprised of 55% bovine (dairy and beef), 25% equine, and the remaining 20% is comprised of goats, sheep, pigs, camelids, and birds. Our practice is unique because of the myriad of cultural backgrounds, interests, and socioeconomic positions of our clients. The practice area encompasses one of the most scenic areas of the country, yet we are located near many cultural centers. New York City is just a commute away for many of our clients.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Externs will participate in the diagnosis, treatment, surgery, and care of farm animals. The extern’s specific responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to: reviewing cases with veterinarians, stocking the vet trucks and developing an understanding of large animal medications, physical examinations of sick livestock, interacting with farmers and conveying explanations for disease processes and etiologies, participating in surgeries and medical treatments, and helping with the processing and submitting of lab samples. We will seek to cater to the extern’s interest, sending the extern on calls that will further their educational process. The extern can expect the typical work day to last 10-12hrs.
