Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Facilities:

Bellevue Animal Hospital (established in 1996) in Bellevue, Ohio and Sandusky Animal Hospital (established in 2010) in Sandusky, Ohio make up our practice group.  The facilities are located about 12 miles apart in two vastly different communities.  The practices are operated as independent businesses, however share the same client base, medical records and staff.  All employees work at both facilities to maintain consistent quality of care and service.

Staff:

5 Veterinarians between both hospitals with varied schedules , 7 Registered Veterinary Technicians and multiple  Veterinary Assistants and Customer Service Representatives help make our hospitals run efficiently.  We have educational and informative monthly staff meetings.  The management team meet once monthly, independent of the staff meeting for planning, review and discussions.

Equipment:

Both facilities offer in-house laboratory services for bloodwork, fecal analysis, and cytology. We utilize Idexx in house equipment as well as the Vetscan Imagyst. We offer digital radiography and digital dental radiography. We have a complete surgical suite with monitoring equipment, separate treatment rooms with dental tables and high and low speed dental equipment, isolation wards, out-patient exam rooms and an in-house pharmacy.  We also have a separate sympathy room at our Sandusky location with a separate entrance to help with comfort for euthanasia appointments. We have a relationship with a mobile ultrasonographer team for ultrasounds and echocardiograms. We also utilize Idexx's outside reference lab as well as VatRad for radiology consults.

Educational Resources:

We have reference libraries at both locations and we utilize VIN as an adjunct to our libraries.  We are members of AAHA, AVMA, AARV, AAV and AEMV and receive the associated publications.  The doctors, registered technicians and lay staff are encouraged to attend continuing education events in the region as well as in Ohio and nationally.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

The student will become acclimated to our facilities and our computer software system (Covetrus Pulse).  They will have a mentor team including a veterinarian and RVT's to assist each day at one of the facilities. The team may be different at times to allow for diversity in training and experiences.  The expectation is to give the student an opportunity to actively work with the team as they attend to the patient being seen.

The student will be asked to actively participate in all aspects of surgical, medical and out-patient cases.  This will include pre-surgical exams, testing and selection of the complete anesthetic protocol for the patient, assist with the surgical procedure, assess monitoring data and recovery of the patient.  For medical cases the student will be involved in assessment of the case, diagnostic test selection, evaluation of data and developing a treatment plan for the patient.  Out-patient services can be comprehensive - the student may assist the technician/assistant with taking a history, initial data collection, briefing the doctor then assisting with the visit including client education prior to completing the out-patient visit. Hospitalized medical cases will be handled similarly.

The student will work closely with the veterinarians and registered technicians throughout their time with us.   The student will have an opportunity to gain average of 32 - 40 hours of experience per week.  Both hospitals are open from 8 am - 5 pm Monday thru Friday and 9 am - noon on Saturday.  A specific schedule can be prepared for each student upon acceptance of the experience.
