Description of Elective Experience

Our practice sees a high volume of sport horses in a multitude of disciplines and is able to offer a wide variety of diagnostic and treatment modalities. Students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with all facets of equine ambulatory medicine, from emergency to internal medicine and reproduction to performance horse work.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Bella Vista employs seven veterinarians (may also include an intern doctor), each of which travel with a veterinary technician/assistant. Our clinic has a five-stall hospital for appointments and select inpatients.  Portable equipment includes digital x-ray, ultrasound, endoscope, shockwave/laser, power float and multiple orthobiologic devices.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Students will ride with a veterinarian each day and will be offered emergency after-hours shifts (including weekends) to broaden their shadowing experience. Student experiences will range from shadowing to hands-on practice, depending on the particular case.
